The North Greenwood Community Coalition (NGCC) began in 2007 when local leaders, a group of concerned citizens and friends from the surrounding communities decided to take responsibility for the growing problem of crime, felonies, drug sales and general lawlessness that had become so pervasive in the North Greenwood area. We realized that we had to do something because drug dealing had reached a point where it was blatantly done right out in the open in the streets and in Church parking lots.
As well a large number of youth had been dropping out of school with, at the most, a ninth grade education. Some of the “dropouts” had taken to the streets establishing successful drug businesses. The local drug dealers became the role models for community youth who only saw the flashy cars and money that the dealers flaunted. Crime was easy. Kids could purchase a gun as easily as they could purchase a basketball. Drug dealing had become glorified and was a solution to the lack of education and parental control.
It had to stop. Something needed to change.
NGCC stepped up to the challenge. Organization started. Monthly open meetings were held to combat the problems as well as organizing Anti-Drug/Crime Marches to let the criminals/drug dealers know that we were not going to take it anymore. Sub-committees were formed and the organization was implemented to help not only combat the drug problems but to also help identify SOLUTIONS that would help the people who lived there to “Take Back Their Community”.
Since that time the NGCC has worked tirelessly to keep the community informed and encourage them to join the NGCC with all working in a cohesive effort to open doors for people needing jobs, resume assistance, drug addiction counseling, mentoring, sports activities, anti-drug events, back to school events and has even helped form a local area Charter School (Life Force Arts and Technology Academy) which is geared in the “performing arts and technology”. This is the most important solution because keeping the children in school and helping them achieve a strong education is the main preventative solution to combating crime.
The NGCC has constantly shown dedication to maintaining a strong relationship with the North Greenwood community and local City government as well striving to form new relationships that will help them achieve the goal of a drug-free and prosperous community that is safe for the future of their children. Please join us, every voice counts in taking back our community.
